History of The Akita

The Akita originated on the island of Honshu in the Akita region of Japan. The breed has been used in a large variety of jobs such as police and military work, guard dog, fighting dog, and as a versatile hunting dog.

• The Akita Inu is considered sacred and a good luck charm in Japan.
• The Akita is one of 7 national dogs of Japan
• The first Akita, Kamikaze-go, was brought to the US in 1937 by Helen Keller. The dog was recieved as a gift during Helen's trip to Akita Perfecture.
